Question of the day

What is resection and how do you perform it?

Resection fixes your position on the map by using two or more known features you can see from where you stand. You identify at least two features on the map that are visible in the terrain and know their exact locations. Then you measure the bearing from your position to each feature with a compass. On the map, from each feature’s known location, draw a line in the direction of the back azimuth (the opposite bearing) of what you measured. The point where those lines cross is your position. Using three features gives an extra check: if the lines don’t meet exactly, you estimate the position where the lines come closest and can average for accuracy. This method doesn’t rely on distance counts or GPS; it relies on knowing where features are on the map and using bearings to intersecting lines to pinpoint where you are. If needed, account for magnetic declination so the plotted lines align correctly with the map’s reference.
